How the math works

Every month, your balance grows by one twelfth of the yearly return, and then your monthly contribution gets added. So the growth in year 20 is growth on your contributions and growth on all the growth from years 1 through 19, which is basically just what compounding means.

Real returns don't show up as a smooth 8% every year. Some years the market is down 20% and some years it's up 25%, so treat this as a picture of how compounding works, not a forecast of what you'll have. It also ignores taxes, fees and inflation.
